What Is a Missing Market Price Warning?
Crypto Tax Calculator (CTC) provides market prices for thousands of crypto assets. However, due to the rapidly evolving nature of the crypto market, there may be cases where CTC cannot retrieve the market price. When this happens, transactions default to a zero price, and a yellow dot appears in the Value column, indicating a missing price. You’ll need to manually review and update it.
This guide will help you resolve missing market price warnings to ensure accurate tax reporting.
Why Market Prices Might Be Missing
CTC may be unable to retrieve historical market prices in the following situations:
Scenario | Description |
Low-trading volume | The token is not frequently traded. |
Low liquidity | The token has very few buyers and sellers, which makes reliable market prices unavailable. |
Newly created tokens | The token is newly launched and does not have enough market price data. |
Unlisted tokens | The crypto is not listed on major exchanges. |
The crypto was acquired through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) or Initial DEX Offering (IDO). |
Step 1: Bulk Look Up Market Price
Before manually adding missing prices, try performing a bulk lookup to check if the market price is now available. This can save you time by reducing the number of manual updates needed.
Option 1: Instant Bulk Lookup Market Price
🔒 Exclusive to Paid Plans: With just one click, you can instantly retrieve market prices on the Review page. This makes resolving missing prices faster and easier. If you're on a free plan, you can manually look up market prices by following the steps in the next section.
Go to the Review page → Resolve missing prices section.
Click ‘Lookup price’ to fetch the market price.
Option 2: Transactions Page: Bulk Look Up Market Price
Go to the Transactions page.
Filter for Warning: Missing Market Price.
Bulk-select the transactions.
Click Command at the bottom of the page.
Click ‘Look up market price’. For a step-by-step guide on bulk editing, check the How to Bulk Edit Transactions guide.
If some transactions still lack market prices after the bulk lookup, follow the steps below to resolve them.
Step 2: Manually Find and Add Price
1. Find Market Prices If Not Available in CTC
If CTC does not have a price feed for your transaction, you can manually obtain the market price from other sources. Here are some options:
Source | Description |
Cryptocurrency Exchanges | Go to any of your exchanges (even if you did not trade that token on the exchange), search for the token, and check the chart to find the historical data. |
Coin Aggregators | Platforms like CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap provide historical price data. You can also check DEX aggregators like Geckoterminal, Dune, or DefiLlama. |
Blockchain Explorers | Some blockchains display token pricing on past transactions. |
2. Manually Add Price
Once you find the price, manually enter prices on the Review or Transactions page to resolve missing market price warnings.
🔒 Review Page: Only available on paid plans. Designed for efficiency, the Review Page automatically gathers all transactions missing market prices in one place, so you can quickly review and update them.
Transactions Page: Accessible to all users; manually enter prices for individual or multiple transactions.
