What Are Unmatched Transfers?

When moving assets between your own wallets and exchanges, Crypto Tax Calculator (CTC) needs to identify both the incoming and outgoing sides of transactions. If one side of the transactions can not be matched, it will appear as an Unmatched Transfer on the Review page for you to check. These usually involved 'Transfer' or 'Bridge'.

Why Should I Resolve Unmatched Transfer Issues?

Unmatched transfers happen when CTC identifies only one side of a transfer, preventing balances and cost bases from being transferred between accounts. This can cause negative balances, missing purchase histories, and inaccurate tax reports. Resolving these issues ensures your holdings, transaction history, and tax calculations are accurate.

A few scenarios can lead to the 'Unmatched Transfers' issue appearing on your Review page in CTC.

Causes

Explanation

Missing wallets or exchanges

You've sent crypto to or received it from a wallet or exchange that hasn't been imported into your account.

Missing data

The wallet or exchange has been imported, but some data is missing. This could happen due to multiple reasons, including:

  • The exchange API restriction.

  • Import instructions are not followed.

  • The account has not been synced, or the CSV files have not been imported up to date.

Incorrect categorization

A transaction has been categorized as a send or receive, but its matching counterpart cannot be found.

Grouping criteria not met

For an incoming and outgoing transaction to be grouped automatically by CTC, there are some criteria to meet. Check these guides for more details:

How To Resolve Unmatched Transfers

To fix unmatched transfers, follow these steps based on the scenario:

1. Import the Missing Counterparty Wallet

If you suspect the missing side of the transfer is from a wallet or exchange that hasn't been added to your CTC account, import that wallet to complete the transfer pair.

2. Check for Missing Data

Missing data can still occur even if the wallet or exchange has been imported. Carefully review the import instructions and any additional notes provided on the Integration page to ensure all data is correctly added.

For detailed guidance, refer to this collection of import tips.

3. Review the Categories

Double-check the categories of your transactions. These categories should only be used when assets are moved between your wallets or exchanges:

  • Send

  • Receive

  • Bridge in (toggled as non-taxable)

  • Bridge out (toggled as non-taxable)

To locate and correct any miscategorized transactions, follow these steps:

(1) Hover over the date of the unmatched transaction and click the Search button to filter transactions for that date. This helps you find the transaction that happened around the same time.

(2) In the View dropdown menu, turn off the Hide ignored/spam transactions toggle to display all transactions.

(3) Locate the transaction and recategorize it to reflect the correct transaction type.

4. Use CTC Magic to assist

If you still can not find the transaction and you are certain both wallets involved in the transfer are already imported, you have two options:

  • Enable "Assume Transfers": This setting automatically matches transfers between your accounts.

  • Manually Generate a Transfer: Use the "Generate Transfer" option from the transaction's menu to create the missing pair.
